Cyberattacks don’t only target large enterprises. Small and medium businesses are often the easier target because they rarely have a dedicated security team. This guide offers practical, actionable steps.

1. Inventory your digital assets

Start by knowing what you own: devices, accounts, cloud services, and databases. You can’t protect what you don’t know exists.

2. Turn on two-factor authentication

2FA is the cheapest and most effective way to stop account takeover. Enable it on email first — it is the recovery key to every other account.

3. Back up regularly

Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two different media, one off-site. Test restores for real; don’t assume they work.

4. Train your people

Over 90% of breaches start with a phishing message. Simple training on spotting suspicious mail dramatically reduces risk.

5. Have a response plan

Know in advance who you call, what you shut down first, and how you notify the relevant authorities when an incident happens.
